Some of us can quote John 3:16 from memory and still struggle to believe it’s about us.
We know God loves the world. We hesitate when it comes to believing He loves me, on a day when I’ve been short with my family, behind on everything, and distant in prayer.
“Beloved” is one of the most personal words in Scripture. It doesn’t describe what you’ve accomplished. It describes how God sees you. These ten verses are a good place to start letting that sink in.
If you’d like to go further, our 21-Day Identity in Christ Devotional walks through this truth one day at a time.
1. Matthew 3:17: Loved before you’ve done anything
At Jesus’ baptism, the Father says, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Jesus hadn’t preached a sermon or performed a miracle yet. The Father’s delight came first, and the work followed from it. Same for you. You’re loved from the same starting point.
2. Ephesians 1:6: Accepted in the beloved
Paul says we are “accepted in the beloved.” Our acceptance doesn’t depend on our performance. It rests on our being in Christ, and He is the beloved.
3. 1 John 3:1: Look at what kind of love this is
“Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us.” John tells us to look, and keep looking. This kind of love isn’t earned, and it’s given freely to us as His children.
4. Romans 8:38-39: Nothing can pull you away
Paul lists death, life, angels, powers, things present and things to come, and concludes that none of it can separate us from God’s love in Christ. You can’t outrun or out sin a love that was never based on your record.
5. Jeremiah 31:3: An everlasting love
God says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” Everlasting means it has no expiration date. It was there before your best day and it will still be there after your worst.
6. Zephaniah 3:17: He sings over you
God “will rejoice over you with joy” and “dance over you with singing.” Most of us picture God as disappointed. This verse pictures Him singing.
7. Romans 9:25: Called beloved when you weren’t
Paul draws on Hosea: “I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.” Wherever you’ve felt overlooked or like an outsider, God specializes in bringing people in.
8. Colossians 3:12: Put on what’s already true
Paul writes to “the elect of God, holy and beloved” and tells them to put on compassion, kindness, and humility. Notice the order: he names who they are first, then tells them what to wear. Identity comes before action, which is the heart of everything we do at Identity Thread.
(Want a daily rhythm for this? Day by day, the 21-Day Devotional helps you put on what’s already true.)
9. John 15:9: Stay in the love you’ve been given
Jesus says, “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.” That’s an invitation to rest. If you want to explore this more, read Abide in Christ: You Can’t Produce What You Haven’t Received.
10. Deuteronomy 33:12: Safe in His arms
“The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him.” Being loved by God means being kept by Him too. You can stop striving to secure yourself, because He’s holding you.
Carrying this into your week
Pick one verse from this list and write it where you’ll see it, whether that’s your phone lock screen, the bathroom mirror, or the inside of your journal. When the voice of “not enough” shows up, answer it with a verse.
Being God’s beloved isn’t a feeling you have to produce. It’s a truth you receive, and then you live from it.
