What if the Christian life was never supposed to be about trying harder to become a better version of yourself?
“I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” — Ezekiel 36:26
Somewhere along the way, we've managed to reduce Christianity to a behavior modification program. Stop doing bad things. Start doing good things. Read your Bible more. Pray harder. Try to be a better husband, wife, parent, or human being.
And when we inevitably fall short? Well, just try harder tomorrow.
But that's not the promise God makes through Ezekiel.
Notice what God doesn't say. He doesn't promise to polish up your old heart. He doesn't offer a few helpful suggestions for improving your spiritual performance. He promises to give you an entirely new heart.
And perhaps the most beautiful part of this passage is who's doing all the work.
"I will give... I will put... I will remove..."
God is the one acting. We are the ones receiving.
This is the beautiful scandal of grace. The Christian life isn't about working our way toward a new identity. It's about learning to live from the new life we've been given in Christ.
Paul echoes this reality in 2 Corinthians 5:17: "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation."
Not a refurbished creation. Not an improved sinner. A new creation.
And this changes everything about how we understand spiritual growth. Obedience isn't an attempt to convince God we're worthy of belonging to Him. It's the fruit of a heart being made alive by His Spirit.
We don't love to earn His affection. We love because He first loved us.
Maybe you've spent years asking God to help you behave better, when He's been inviting you to discover the new heart He's already given you in Christ.
You don't need to manufacture a new identity. You need to awaken to the One you've been given.
That's the heart behind Identity Thread. Even our Tender Heart tee is meant to be a simple reminder of this extraordinary promise.
Because the gospel isn't merely that God makes bad people better.
It's that in Christ, He makes the dead alive.
Wear your identity. Live from His love.
